Poetry

Yesterday in class, I found myself torn during the discussion on writing poetry instead of pros. I am pretty scientifically minded. I rather like bullet points and concise facts. I like things to be clear and plainly expressed. However, for some reason that I will never begin to be able to explain, I love poetry. Despite mystery and an unclear message, I have always enjoyed reading poetry, and even writing it (badly) on occasion. ”The best lack all conviction, while the worst/Are full of passionate intensity” just wouldn’t be as effective had Yeats said “Good people are lazy and bad people are motivated.”

  1. I like poetry because it's more than simply saying or writing a speech or research paper. These things simply lay out the facts and the writing makes its points. However, poetry and prose takes the facts and writes them, to quote Mitchell, "sexily". For example, the line, "But soft, what light through yonder window break. It is the East and Juliet is the sun." is much more aesthetically appealing than "Hey! What's in that window over there. Oh. It's Juliet.".

  2. I agree with you Jamie. I love scientific facts. I love clear cut and concise. That's the way that I grew up. If you don't have something to say, say nothing. If you can say it in a shorter way then say it that way. At the same though I love poetry. I love Poe, Emerson, even Yeats. It's kind of one of those love hate relationships that I find myself in.
