Is Killing Justified or Not?
Our discussion our Tuesday really got me thinking a lot about death and killing (such happy topics . . . not!). A lot of people said that they think it is not a human's place to kill someone in self defense, or to end the life of a person who is destroying the lives of many other innocent people. I really don't think that anyone is really in the position to sit in our safe classroom at our christian college in Alabama and judge those who have killed dictators or saved the lives of many people by killing another in self defense. It is easy to judge someone from the sidelines, but I know that if I was ever put into the situation where someone was trying to kill me, I would do everything in my power to defend myself. If that meant that I had to kill the villain trying to hurt me, I would. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I believe that God gave humans the nature instincts to live. I don't want to die and I certainly hope that no one else in our class wants to either! I know that we are not the ones who judge other humans, but that doesn't mean that we should just throw our lives away. To say that humans shouldn't judge other people because God is the only true god is like saying that there should just be no lawyers or judges to put people behind bars. But of course we would never do that because then there would be even more criminals running free around the world than there already is. Basically what I am trying to say in my rambling is that we live in a cursed world, which means that we are going to be faced with murders, death, and difficult decisions, but that doesn't mean that we should just let the innocent be murdered. I think it is okay and even good to protect the innocent and tho kill anyone like Hitler who is killing entire people groups and starting war between anions.

This discussion also got me thinking about where i really stand on this subject. When i think about it, its almost like i agree with you but at the same time disagree. I definitely agree that self defense is completely justified, but i also think that as Christians, there are some things that should be on our minds. One way i think about this situation sometimes is that if i am out downtown and someone mugs me, of course my natural instinct is going to be to defend myself, but then again, who am i to decide that my life is more valuable than that person's. If i know that if i were to die from this mugging, i would go to heaven, then doesnt it seem kind of selfish to kill someone else who very well may not be going to the same place just so i can go on living?
ReplyDeleteHowever, i will say that if i were to see someone else being mugged, then it would absolutely be my responsibility to defend the person being wronged. Selfless defense, as i would call it, is completely justified in my mind. Just like i dont think its your place to decide between your life and another's, i dont think its your place to make that decision for someone else based on what you think is right.
